Enjoy The Holidays Without Disappointment

Schedules, drama, and high expectations can all take the joy right out of the Christmas season.

The holidays might not always unfold the way we plan and truth be told, they can actually be a mixed bag of excitement and stress all at the same time!  We may even think that somehow problems will disappear magically only to be disappointed when things don’t meet our expectations.

How do we get through the stress of the expectations of family, friends and even ourselves in a practical, life giving way, while still focusing on what’s important and the real reason we celebrate?

Here are a few ways to make it easier to navigate the holidays when things don’t go as expected.

  1. Remember to keep Jesus first and why we celebrate.  Pray for your home, friends and family and ask God to bless them.
  2. You matter too!  Guard your heart.  It’s okay to say “no” to too much or “no” to unproductive discussions about the day.
  3. Set boundaries (with love) when others are unwilling to bend or are insensitive to your limits.  Remember that everyone has their own idea of how they want things to be for Christmas.  We have to love ourselves and love them enough to honor what’s best.
  4. If money is an issue, use your creative talent to make something special from the heart.  You don’t have to go all out for appearances.
  5. Give the gift of your time to a community outreach. Serving others is a blessing and will keep things in perspective.
  6. Family traditions are hard to break, but if they’re not fun or meaningful anymore, then maybe it’s time to explore something new.
  7. Let go of perfection.  Your house doesn’t have to be perfect.  It’s okay to ask people to bring a dish and it’s okay if wrapping paper and dirty dishes make a mess for a few hours.  Enjoy people!
  8. Lean on God through the stress.  Talk to Him when something feels out of your control.

Let us know how you’re doing! Keep Jesus at the center of Christmas and you will surely have a blessed holiday!

“That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them.  They were terrified, but the angel reassured them “Don’t be afraid!” he said.  “I bring you good news that will be great joy to all people.  The Savior-yes-the Messiah, the Lord has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign:  You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”  Suddenly the angel was joined by a vast host of others-the armies of heaven-praising God and saying “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those whom God is pleased.” Luke 2:8-14 NLT
